History

The firm in its original form was known as Taylor Scrivener Adjusters, incorporated in 1943. The principals were Jim Taylor and Horace A. Scrivener. Both of these men had worked as adjusters with the firm of C.M Brewster Co.  for the ten years prior. C.M. Brewster was the first adjusting firm in Saskatchewan.

Following the second world war, in 1945, Douglas A. Scrivener, the son of Horace Scrivener, returned from serving in the navy and joined the firm in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He worked in Saskatoon until 1951 when Jim Taylor passed away. At that time Douglas moved to the Regina office.

Taylor Scrivener Co continued until the retirement of Horace Scrivener at which time the name was changed to D.A. Scrivener Adjusters Co in 1961. Horace Scrivener passed away in 1984 and his son, Douglas passed away in 1980.

The company prospered and grew. In 1965, John F. Overend Joined the company. John had been previously employed as an adjuster with Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company and Saskatchewan Government Insurance. John had begun his insurance career in 1948. John passed away in 1993.

In 1966 John Zaran joined the firm after sixteen years as an Underwriter at Saskatchewan Government Insurance. John retired from the firm in 1986 and resides in Regina.

In 1973, Doug Scrivener was appointed to the newly created position as Claims Manager for the Insurance Coproration of British Columbia. He moved to Vancouver where he passed away in 1980. In 1973 D.A. Scrivener Adjusters Ltd was formed to carry on the Saskatchewan business. The shareholders of D.A. Scrivener Adjusters were John Overend and John Zaran.

In 1981, James M. Overend and Gary J. Zaran both joined the firm as adjusters although each had worked with the firm previously during major loss events.

In 1986 upon his retirement, John Zaran’s interests in the company were transferred to his son Gary J. Zaran, CIP FCIAA. Gary has been the corporate secretary with the firm since that time.

In 1993, John Overend sold his interest in the firm to his son,  James M. Overend, B.Admin, FCIP, FCIAA. At that time, James became the fourth president of D.A. Scrivener Adjusters Ltd.; the position he holds today.

In its history, Scrivener Claims as it is now referred to, has operated offices in numerous Saskatchewan towns and cities. The list includes, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Yorkton, Estevan, Melfort, North Battleford, Moose Jaw and Moosomin. Utilizing evolving technology and remote work applications Scrivener has remained on the leading edge of providing "closer to the loss" service to claimants and underwriters.
